January is the month for being prepared and to plan for the year ahead, as little can be done in the garden if the weather is too severe.
Weather permitting and if the ground is not too wet or frozen, continue to plant trees, shrubs, roses and hedging and prepare the vegetable garden.
If frost has lifted any new plants and shrubs, heel them back.
Stand seed potatoes in trays with eyes uppermost to encourage them to sprout – place them in a bright frost free place.
In the greenhouse, ventilation is important on mild days.
Repair paths, fences and gates, clean all tools and service all equipment.
TOP TIP - a new year should bring a new compost heap into your garden.
