Jobs for October
WE RECOMMEND SHOWA 451
Much to do this month as its time to think about frost damage and take action to avoid it. For example, any tender perennials which are easily movable can be carefully dug up, placed in pots and over-wintered in a cold greenhouse.

Final jobs for the lawn; scarify existing lawns and brush sharp sand into the spiked holes, last chance for a lawn autumn feed and remember to keep mowing with blades set on high.

Plant any remaining bulbs – the sooner the better really.

Keep on top of fallen leaves etc and put them on the compost heap.

Continue to dead-head roses - they could flower until Christmas!

Plant out any spring flowering plants such as pansies and wallflowers.

For the vegetable garden, plant out your spring cabbage, autumn onion sets and garlic, plus don’t forget to dig up your remaining potatoes - not very tasty after they are hit by frost!

It is usually a good time to paint fencing and trellis, the plants can be moved back from the fence more easily now.
